Close-up of a punched "Jacquard" card for controlling a lace-making loom.
The holes are at approximately 4 mm intervals.
A proposed pattern had to be converted to cards, and the cards punched by hand.
The cards were then tied together in chains.
This card and the next photos are from a factory on Humber Road, Beeston, which closed in the late 1970s.
Nottingham staff wrote software to produce the cards automatically.
Similar machinery is still in use abroad.
