The use of fading

Magic lantern shows would often use two lanterns to enable the fading of one picture on top of another.

Some sample slides

The shows would involve illustrated readings, perhaps involving two lanterns so that images could be faded on top of each other. This image is entitled "Babes in the Wood".

This second slide would be faded on top during the reading of an appropriate poem.
See elsewhere for other examples presented as rollover images.

Long stories (taking 40 minutes, according to the script) involved moralistic tales such as that of Gabriel Grub in which a grave digger drinks in a cemetery one Christmas Eve, and goblins appear (faded in on a second lantern) who take him down to hell. The Chief Goblin shows him scenes from his youth, so he repents of his sins, and returns.
